Wagner’s gentle idyll, intended as a birthday (and Christmas) present to his wife, Cosima, takes familiar themes from the third part of The Ring of the Nibelung, and weaves them into a seamless romantic tapestry. Bruckner’s last completed symphony, associated by some with the apocalypse, is by turns contemplative, dreamy, wild and impassioned, and ultimately triumphant.
